PG-FIS/ITA Master's Student Publishes Tutorial on Superconducting Quantum Circuits

    Master’s student Denys Derlian Carvalho Brito, from the Graduate Program in Physics at ITA (PG-FIS), has published the article “Tutorial on Superconducting Quantum Circuits: From Basics to Applications” (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13538-025-01983-8) in the journal Brazilian Journal of Physics, in a special issue celebrating the 100th anniversary of Quantum Mechanics. The work was developed in collaboration with his advisor, Prof. Dr. André Jorge Carvalho Chaves, and Fernando Valadares, a former ITA student who is currently pursuing his PhD at the Centre for Quantum Technologies – National University of Singapore.

    Quantum computing is based on the use of qubits—physical systems capable of exploiting quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement—allowing the efficient processing of problems that challenge classical computers. Among the various platforms currently under investigation, superconducting quantum circuits stand out as one of the most promising architectures, being employed by major research centers and international companies in the development of quantum processors. In this context, the work was conceived within the framework of ongoing research in quantum computing and superconducting circuits, an area considered strategic for global scientific and technological advancement.

    Within this framework, the article presents a comprehensive and didactic introduction to superconducting quantum circuits, connecting the theoretical foundations of electrical circuit quantization to the practical implementation of transmon qubits. The study covers topics ranging from the physical description of the devices to modeling techniques and numerical simulations used in the analysis of circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) systems, providing a reference material aimed at the training of new researchers in the field.

    The publication reflects the growing development of quantum technologies research in Brazil and highlights the role of PG-FIS/ITA in training specialists capable of contributing to one of the most advanced frontiers of contemporary physics. In an international scenario marked by strong investment in quantum computing, the work reinforces the strategic importance of scientific production and human resource training for Brazil’s technological development.
